Melting the Bronze

Melting the Bronze

The appropriate type of bronze is melted. Bronze is an alloy of copper and tin with other metals added in small quantities depending on the final purpose. Phosphorus is added, for example, to produce phosphor bronze which is very hard wearing. Bronzes begin to melt at 925° Celsius (1 700° Fahrenheit). The entire crucible needs to be at exactly the right temperature and fluidity to ensure that, when the liquid is poured, it reaches every part of the glowing red ceramic shell.
