Story of a Bronze - 5

Dewaxing

Dewaxing

Once it is perfectly dry - any moisture remaining could evaporate instantly and casue the shell to explode, the ceramic shell is placed in a kiln to melt the wax. The wax is collected and re-used for the runners and branches of future wax trees.

The ceramic shell is now hollow - the vacant space inside representing the original pattern. Once the wax has melted, the shell temperature rises to around 1000°ree;C - this vitrifies the shell and makes the mould very strong.

The shell can be used immediately or stored and re-heated for the pouring of the bronze.
